Overview

A European Navy relied on a long-standing Military Message Handling System (MMHS) to ensure secure communications between ships and shore-based command. While the system worked reliably, an operating system change meant an upgrade was essential.

With operational performance and security at stake, the Navy turned to Nexor for a smooth and secure migration all without disrupting day-to-day operations.

The Challenge

The Navy has used Nexor’s MMHS since 2005. Built to handle secure communications, it played a vital role in connecting vessels and command centres. Over time, though, the original operating system (SPARC Solaris) became outdated and less supported, posing a potential risk.

To keep pace with modern standards and ensure long-term support, the Navy decided to migrate the system to a more current platform.

• Without altering how the system operated, so no additional training was needed  

• With minimal disruption to operational services  

• In coordination with their existing systems integrator  

The Solution

Nexor worked closely with the Navy and its systems integrator to deliver a modernised yet familiar solution. Here’s how we made it happen:

• Software Migration: We ported the MMHS from Solaris to Linux using Red Hat for development, then tested it on CentOS for compatibility  

• Code Updates: The C and C++ codebase was adapted, including protocol handlers, low-bandwidth comms, and client-side applications  

• Training & Support: Nexor provided updated reference systems and a tailored two-day training session for the systems integrator  

• Collaboration: Our team supported testing and validation to ensure a smooth, phased rollout

The Navy successfully transitioned to a secure, supported platform with:

• Minimal operational impact

• Zero need for retraining

• Improved long-term system support  

The upgraded MMHS was deployed across 13 naval vessels, keeping communications secure and resilient.
