At the tactical level, interoperability leads to force-wide sharing and understanding, coupled with improved collaborative working.

Border management and control are key components in achieving interoperability. Both guard and gateway border capability is required; guards provide the ability to control entry and exit of information in an unmodified form in accordance with defined security policies; gateways allow the passage of information with relevant modifications to ensure acceptability by the receiving domain.
